I ended up writing a String class that forced everything to be UTF-8, and then used that class everywhere instead of bare strings. The problem was that I soon found myself rewriting almost everything. Now I'm back working mostly in Java which, from day 1, used Unicode natively and everywhere. PHP needs to remove every single function and refactor everything into namespaced classes.

I ran into the PHP UTF-8 thing a few years ago. Its only difficult for those who apply when they are outside the USA and wait for answer. The vast majority of immigrants arrive in the USA, get settled and only then begin looking about ways to obtain a green card. $500,000 is a bit too much. I think $10,000 - $15,000 is correct. But many people (they are now called undocumented immigrants, before illegal immigrants) live quite well with just a state ID card or driver license since majority of Americans don't have passports, and they use a federal tax id number to pay all taxes and work since social security numbers are not obligatory. In many states its illegal for police to even ask if a person is a citizen. As an immigrant myself from Russia, I think it would be a good thing if you moved. (No, I waited 5 years in line like an idiot)Like your articles. Have fun!

Martin,

You are mistaken about IS immigration laws. Thank you. wordpress finally is working and urls look pretty. thanx!.Below I address the idiots who bad mouth this article as too complex.-------------------------------------------------@Brent Gulanowski - I spent over 2 days , 10 hours each trying different instructions to get this specific part of the installation working. I was about to give up and pay $15, until I found this page that's written in plain language, that explained the concept of those blocks and their arrangement which allowed me to adapt my config and get it to work(php-fpc/nginx/ubuntu/sql/apc/memcache plugin/wordpress) that 18 other sites did not do (or did but the explanation went over my head).I never seen a Linux until yesterday morning, and I figured out where the config file is by looking around and first getting familiar with sudo and nano and mv and command prompt.
